SCHOOL RESPONSES

Typical school responses

• Principals

  • Fabulous, awesome, incredible experience.
  • Our students live in a low socio-economic area and this is an experience they will remember for the rest of their lives.
  • This was the best performance I have seen in my 20 plus years in LAUSD.
  • We felt as if the musicians were taking us on a history tour of the origins of jazz.
  • The LAJS Jazz in Schools program kicked off our Black History Month research and celebration.  As a result, many of our students have chosen musicians for their research projects.

• Teachers

  • Thanks to the exceptional performance, the interest and appreciation of jazz has been so stirred that we are planning a jazz club to meet during lunch hour once a week.
  • In 18 years I have never seen an assembly that gave so much enrichment in so little time.  Thank you for keeping the arts a valuable experience for our children.
  • With obsessing over standardized test results, our kids need more soul with their studies.  I will be following up for the rest of the year.
  • It was a fun program and even though it taught them about music in New Orleans, it was also a great multicultural lesson.
  • My students were not only focused, they were on the edge of their seats.  What an incredible gift for our kids.

• Students

  • I never thought jazz could be so cool.  When I grow up I want to play an instrument.
  • I made a mini piano, trumpet, saxophone, drums and bass for my dolls.
  • It was the most funnest day of my entire life.  I now signed up for saxophone lessons.
  • I wish I could hear your music over and over again.  I like jazz now and instead of listening to Radio Disney, I’m going to listen to jazz.
  • I felt like I could go down to the basketball court and make 14 slam dunks in a row.
