Jazz in Schools Celebrates
Black History Month in February with Free Jazz Concerts in LAUSD
Once again, in February, the Los Angeles Jazz Society will bring its outstanding Jazz in Schools Program to 45 elementary schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Led by our three dedicated and inspired Group Leaders Maestro Delbert Taylor, Charles Owens and Ernie Fields, Jr. (all three of whom were honored as LAJS Jazz Educators of the Year in 2013), our jazz musicians will “excite, educate and engage public school students with the vibrant rhythms and sounds of the only indigenous American music – jazz.” Two back-to-back one-hour programs will be presented at each school, typically beginning around 9:00am.
It is a thrill to see the excitement these programs generate in young children, many of whom have had little or no exposure to jazz. Each program traces the history and development of jazz from New Orleans to present day and introduces the children to the instruments and structure of jazz music. In an era of drastically reduced school budgets, the Jazz in Schools Program is often the only exposure to live music the students may experience during the school year.
