November 1st was the night to celebrate an outstanding evening of jazz performances at The Montalban Theatre in Hollywood! Our concert was hosted by the fabulous Rhonda Hamilton from KJAZZ who effortlessly introduced the honorees and jazz artists beginning with an opening number by the Bill Green Centennial Band comprised of both students and friends of the renowned educator and musician.
The Jazz Society’s 2025 Jazz Tribute honoree Christian McBride left everyone wanting more – especially after the sincerely memorable duo with presenter and fellow bassist John Clayton. He is an incomparable performer and truly deserved the standing ovations he received! Jazz Arranger & Composer honors went to multi-talented musician/educator Patrice Rushen who performed with her quartet, and Jazz Vocalist Gretchen Parlato had the audience applauding as she and her band showcased her vocal artistry. The Shelly Manne New Talent Award was obviously well deserved by young drummer Saoirse Sipes. A special Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to outgoing president Lois Saffian for her countless years of community service to LA Jazz Society and many other non-profits. In addition, the David L. Abell ‘Angel’ Award went home with jazz lover Edythe Bronston, President and Founder of the CALIFORNIA JAZZ FOUNDATION which supports jazz musicians in need.
We truly thank Lee Ritenour, Tierney Sutton, Joe LaBarbera, and John Clayton for joining LA Jazz Society President Mike Todd, Treasurer Rita Zwern and new boardmember Noah Straus in making those presentations – and thank our honorees for giving our audience such terrific performances. Sincere appreciation to our main sponsors — Herb Alpert Foundation, Adler Deutsch Foundation, Michael Lazaroff/Jazz Cruises, Lauren Johnson & Marissa Mandel, Cathy Stone/Vail Jazz, Howard Banchik, KJAZZ, Carole & Jim Barrall, and Patrisha Thomson – and to all who supported this amazing evening (which also included a World Series final game).
