LA Jazz Society Artistic Chair Reflects on the Eaton Fire with ABC News

A Personal Loss, A Renewed Commitment

In January, our Artistic Chair and Music Director, John Clayton, faced a heartbreaking personal loss when his home was destroyed in the Eaton fire. In a recent interview with ABC News, he opened up about the emotional toll—and the unexpected clarity—that followed.

“The devastation revealed not just a loss, but something gained,” Clayton shared.
“It strengthened my commitment to do what I do.”

John’s words reflect not only his resilience but also his deep-rooted passion for jazz and community. In the face of tragedy, he continues to inspire the next generation of musicians with renewed purpose.

Our thoughts are with John and all those affected by the fire. We are grateful for his leadership, heart, and unwavering dedication to this art form and the Los Angeles Jazz Society’s mission.
