Julie Berghofer

Julie Berghofer joined the LAJS Board at the invitation of Flip Manne and is now the Secretary and host of the Young Musicians Showcase Series. Julie has enjoyed a rich career as a musician and music therapist in the UK and USA.
Julie has over 30 years of music therapy experience working in the pediatric field as a clinician, consultant, teacher and supervisor. For many years she was Head of the Music Therapy Services for the National Health Service in the south of England, and later joined the tutorial team at the Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy Center, London. 


Julie moved to Los Angeles in 1996 and became Assistant Director of the Music Therapy Wellness Clinic at California State University, Northridge. In 2003 she received the Professional Practice Award from the Western Region American Music Therapy Association for her continued contribution to the profession. Julie is one of the authors of the ‘Individualized Music Therapy Assessment Profile’ published by JKP in 2007 and used internationally. Julie retired from teaching and clinical work at CSUN in 2020 and now maintains a small private music therapy practice.

Julie graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and started working as a harpist in West End theater productions. She then freelanced in London as an orchestral and studio musician playing a wide range of musical genres. She was a member of the quartet  ‘Spectrum’,  whose unique sound made them a popular choice for concerts, radio and TV shows. In the 90’s, Julie toured extensively with Frank Sinatra in the UK and Europe. She relocated to the USA in 1996 and married bassist Chuck Berghofer. Julie continued working in the LA studios and on stage with memorable performances including George Benson, Andrea Bocelli, Grammy Awards and the Three Tenors. 

Julie is passionate about music, is an avid jazz fan and a strong advocate for the role of arts in education.
